What are diamonds ?

Rough diamonds
Rough diamonds

Diamonds are a unique and fascinating product. They cannot be compared to a ton of copper or an ounce of gold. They are mysterious and rare and mined under extreme conditions - from the icy Tundra of the north to the hot African deserts of the south.
Created before life began on our planet, diamonds have always been associated with mystery, myth and magic.
As diamonds require specific geological conditions in order to form, they are only found in certain remote locations around the world.
Southern Africa produces the majority of the world’s diamonds, but there is also diamond production in Russia, Canada, Australia, India, China and South America.
Based on 2006 Kimberley Process production statistics, Botswana is the world’s biggest producer of diamonds by value, followed by Russia, Canada, South Africa and Angola.

Flawless Cut

Flawless Cut is the excellent/perfect cut with the angles cut to perfection. You can demonstrate this by using a Flawless Cut Hearts and Arrows Viewer, which is available in every store:

The Bottom View shows 8 precise symmetrical hearts when viewed on an unset Flawless Cut Diamond.

Why is Diamond Cut the ‘Secret C’?

For many years diamond cut was not graded, so the public did not know to ask the difference between poorly cut, average cut and finely cut diamonds. It costs more in terms of manpower and rough material to craft a diamond to a range of measurements that result in best performance, so manufacturers have cut most diamonds to average quality so they will take less time and be larger when finished. With this fact guarded for many years most consumers still do not know the difference between average and fine-make diamonds. Over 90% of the world’s production remains at average quality.

The Four Cs

Diamonds are judged on several factors that determine their beauty. Most diamonds never reach the consumer market because they are too flawed. Often, these diamonds are used for industrial purposes -- as an abrasive, for drill bits or for cutting diamonds and other gems. If you've ever purchased a diamond, you've heard of the "4 Cs:"

   1. Cut - This is the geometric proportions of a diamond and how it was cut. When a diamond is cut, facets are created and finite form of diamond is determined.

 2. Clarity - This is the measure of a diamond's flaws, or inclusions that can be seen in diamond. purity levels flawless start moving down and very very small (VVS), very slight (VS) and small inclusions (SI).

   3. Carat - The weight of a diamond. One carat equals about 200 milligrams.

   4. Color - In referring to transparent diamonds, the color scale ranges from D to Z, beginning with Icy White - the color of diamonds more expensive transparent - and ending with a light yellow.
